Chapter 2

Character Is Who You Are When No One Is Watching

"Mom's hands were shaking as she stared at the bank statement. Not from fear. But from possibility. There sat $4,900 in her account. The exact amount they needed to get out of debt, yet it wasn't theirs..."

"The Test That Changed Everything"

We'd failed at the American dream. Ten acres in Arlington, Arizona—supposed to be paradise. Instead, it buried us in $15,000 of debt and dust.

But something happened in that dusty hole. My parents got saved and made a decision that would echo through generations: Do what's right, no matter what it costs.

That decision was tested when a bank error put $4,900 in their account—enough to wipe out almost all their remaining debt. Mom drove it back the next morning. Every penny.

Within days of passing that test, a mobile home park manager made them an offer: $1,000 to move out of Arlington, plus all the concrete work at the new location.

Character had started compounding faster than money ever could.

We pulled out of that hole with shovels in our hands and integrity intact. The dust we left behind was nothing compared to the foundation we were building.

The Arlington property where character was tested

Though it was desolate, we had a great view and lots of room to ride dirt bikes! Me and my brother would put quarters on the railroad tracks and explore for hours.

Mom was always right there with us, working hard and keeping us all going.

My Dads old ford truck. Somehow he always kept it running.

Jake and Kable moving the shed

Moving day, we carried the shed on a trailer to the new property. My Dad would dump the bed of the dump truck and we would slide down it.

We didn't have much, but we were happy.

What would it be without the family dog? I don't remember her name though

The Big Ideas

Character Defines Success

Your character is revealed not in moments of convenience, but in times when no one is watching. True success is built on integrity, consistency, and doing the right thing regardless of the circumstances.

Showing Up Matters

How you present yourself—from your appearance to your attitude—signals your respect for others and commitment to excellence. The navy suit principle: dress for who you're becoming, not where you are.

Consistency Builds Trust

Small, consistent actions compound over time to create reputation and trust. People judge you not on your best moments, but on your standard operating procedure—who you are when it's inconvenient.

Your Turn

Take an honest look at who you are when no one is watching. This self-assessment helps you identify the gap between your public persona and private character, then create a plan to align them for authentic success.
